Most people over-buy. The right diesel bowser is the one that matches how fast you actually burn fuel and how often you can realistically get it refilled — not the biggest one on the price list.
Start with burn rate, not tank size
Work out roughly how much diesel your site consumes in a week, then size so that one fill covers that week with headroom. A bowser that needs refilling twice a week costs you in delivery callouts and downtime. One sized for a month of fuel ties up capital and, on a mobile unit, becomes a towing problem.
A rough starting point used across construction and agriculture: size for 7–10 days of consumption. That gives you a buffer if a delivery slips without carrying dead stock.
Fixed or mobile?
This decides more than capacity does.
- Fixed / static bowsers suit a yard, depot or plant where refuelling happens in one place. They can be larger because nothing has to tow them, and they are simpler to bund properly.
- Trailer-mounted bowsers suit sites where the fuel goes to the machine rather than the machine coming to the fuel — civil works, farms, spread-out operations. Capacity is limited by what your tow vehicle can legally and safely handle when full.
Remember diesel weighs roughly 0.83–0.85 kg per litre. A full 1,000 L bowser is carrying around 850 kg of fuel before you count the trailer, tank and pump. Check your tow rating against the loaded mass, not the empty mass — this is the step people skip.
Common capacities and where they land

If you are between two sizes and the bowser is static, go up. If it is towed, go down and refill more often.
Match the pump to the job
Capacity is only half the spec. A 1,000 L bowser with an undersized pump will frustrate everyone who uses it.
- Manual / rotary hand pumps — no power needed, cheapest, fine for occasional low-volume dispensing. Slow.
- 12V pumps — run off a vehicle or battery. Typical output in the 40–60 L/min range. The standard choice for mobile units with no mains power.
- 220V pumps — higher sustained flow, better for depots and yards with power. Not an option in the field without a generator.
Filling a 400 L machine tank at 40 L/min takes about ten minutes. At 15 L/min it takes half an hour. Multiply that by every machine, every day.

Do not forget the metering
If you need to allocate fuel cost per machine, per job or per operator, specify a flowmeter at purchase. Retrofitting later usually costs more than adding it up front, and you lose the data for every month in between.
Containment
A bowser sitting on bare ground is a spill risk and, depending on how and where it is stored, a compliance one. Read spill containment and bunding requirements in South Africa before you decide where the unit lives.
